We got back in the studio to record on Friday and had a visit from the show's real producer - Finn Carlson! Finn showed his dad what's up behind the soundboard and called the shots to keep us on track as we got into the wild world of principal autonomy and oversight.
Andy starts by filling us in on the new Chancellor of NYC Public Schools and compares her management of principals in the district to that of her predecessor. There are some marked differences, to say the least. And NYC seems to have moved in the opposite direction from what DC Public Schools have done. What's the balance between autonomy and oversight when it comes to school leadership? (Cal even offered us a rare glimpse into his days in Chicago Public Schools' Central Office to provide some perspective from the district level.)
Things then got a little crazy recording our (fake) ads this week! (We know you love those! Lindsey at our Bridgeport Studios is really nervous we're going to get sued though and somehow she will be implicated. I mean...we're giving them free advertising... Right? What harm could come from that? We did not heed her advice to stop recording fake ads.) Stay tuned for ads from Headspace, Helix Mattresses, and products that we wish were available for teachers. Including a very practical, albeit strange, product that Andy wishes he had...
Finally, to the calls. We had two great callers that we gave some advice to, including a teacher who had a pretty strange (and strained) planning partnership with another teacher in her building. She pretty much knows where it went wrong, but she's really struggling with how to help other people avoid the same mistakes as she moves into an administrative role next year.
Then, an international caller! A teacher from South of the Border at a school in Mexico is struggling to motivate her students to comply with deadlines. Things get pretty heady with our response to this one. Literally. The prefrontal cortex plays a major role in our response.
We round out the show with a few response calls. We hear from two different callers responding to S0 Ep02's discussion of Mayor Rahm's proposed post-secondary plan graduation requirements.
Finn Carlson is gonna be hard at work putting in "hip hop violin" under our voices in post-production, so look for this episode to drop on the Fourth of July!
